The Legend of Mulan in Sydney
The Concourse Theatre Chatswood
Synopsis
Setting out to “impress the world with Chinese dance of Hong Kong character”, the Hong Kong Dance Company brought its critically acclaimed dance drama The Legend of Mulan to Australia by invitation of Sydney’s Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office. Apart from stage performances, the HKDance engaged in the community, exchanging dance practice with professional companies and performing arts students, at the same time introducing them to Chinese dance. The HKDance visited the Sydney Dance Company, the city’s premier contemporary dance company, joining their ballet class and observing rehearsals for a new work, and hosted a workshop for the company’s Pre-professional Year students, demonstrating the basics of Chinese classical and folk dances. The HKDance also organized a masterclass and worksop for the Lee Academy and the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts respectively, where company members demonstrated Chinese dance technique and engaged students in actual Chinese folk-dance numbers.
To promote Chinese dance to the Sydney public, the HKDance performed in the open air plaza of the World Square Shopping Centre in Sydney’s city centre. Company members not only demonstrated Chinese dance technique but also performed excerpts from The Legend of Mulan. They even invited the public to join in, giving them a firsthand experience in sharing the fun of Chinese dance. Four exquisite costumes from HKDance’S various productions were also included in an exhibition entitled “Welcome to Our World: Arts.Culture.Hong Kong,” focusing on the vitality that is Hong Kong arts and culture, organized by Sydney’s HKETO.
