STORM CLOUDS — An Immersive Journey: HK Classic Comics ✕ Dance ✕ Arts Tech

A Dazzling Martial Arts Fantasy Realm in Victoria Harbour

Funded by the “Arts Technology Funding Pilot Scheme” of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDance) once again collaborates with Mr. Ma Wing-shing, the legendary comics artist and original creator of the classic Hong Kong comic series Storm Riders, after a ten-year hiatus. This time, we join forces with Don’t Believe In Style (DBIS), a leading local arts and technology team, and a group of talented artists to break through the boundaries of time, space, and reality using innovative arts and technology. We invite you to explore a dazzling martial arts fantasy realm in Victoria Harbour in our three-day large-scale outdoor free public event, "STORM CLOUDS—An Immersive Journey: HK Classic Comics ✕ Dance ✕ Arts Tech", at the Piazza, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Over a year in the making, the event consists of two major sections: an exhibition and a performance, runs from 10 to 12 January. The exhibition, the 270-degree arc-shaped “STORM CLOUDS: An Interactive Time Travel Experience”, comprises three zones: The Epic Journey of STORM CLOUDS, AR Filter: Acquire The Legendary Martial Arts Skills, and LED 3D Visual Interactive Experience Zone. The experience zone leads the audience into the fantastical world of martial arts comics, presenting five classic scenes from Storm Riders through innovative immersive visuals and sound effects. Ma Wing-shing has picked up his pen once more after many years to create a new hand-drawn artwork “Raging Sea”, to be unveiled for this grand event. Brought to life in dynamic 3D visuals, the artwork vividly presents the tension between Lip Fung, Bo Ging-wan, and Hung Ba. This spectacular oeuvre is sure to wow audiences.

"STORM CLOUDS: Outdoor Dance Performance with 3D Projection" runs from 11 to 12 January, with four performances in total. It combines 3D projection mapping and live electronic music by multimedia artist and electronic musician Choi Sai-ho. Dancers interact with cutting-edge technology on the 8-metre-wide giant “Sword Pool” and catwalk stage, recreating the grandeur of Storm Clouds. Set against the mesmerising vistas of Victoria Harbour under the night sky, this spectacular performance weaves together a visual feast, in a passionate collision of Hong Kong classic comics, dance, and technology.

For this artistic installation, we have specially invited participation from local tertiary institutions. In addition to students from the Department of Art and Design at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, who serve as exhibition docents, students of Theatre Design from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ School of Theatre & Entertainment Arts have been fortunate to receive personal guidance from Ma Wing-shing himself. Their large-scale mural artwork inspired by the classic Storm Riders is displayed on the outer wall of the exhibition building. This collaboration connects the innovative thinking of today’s generation with the spirit of classic Hong Kong comics, fostering the continuation of local artistic creativity.

The iconic local comic Storm Riders, which resonates so deeply with the collective memories of Hong Kong people, celebrates its 35th anniversary.  Dance drama STORM CLOUDS: Collection and Commemorative Exhibition, holds from 2 to 13 January, Mr Ma Wing-shing has generously lent his private Storm Riders collection, including character head sculptures and legendary weapons—the Ultimate Sword and Blizzard Sabres—for this commemorative exhibition. These are complemented by production stills from HKDance’s award-winning 2014 performances of Storm Clouds. Together, they evoke precious memories and immerse visitors in the very heart of local artistic culture.
