Eileen Chang is a singular and legendary figure in 20th century modern Chinese literature. With a cool gaze she outlined deep emotions, capturing with exquisite brushstrokes the heart-stopping moments in ordinary lives. Hong Kong — this diverse, fluid city where tradition and modernity overlap, East meets West, and survival intertwines with desire — profoundly shaped the colour palette of her writing. The green hills of the Mid-Levels, the sea at Repulse Bay, the“ding ding”of the trams: Eileen Chang’s Hong Kong is filled with striking colour contrasts, a fusion of splendour and desolation, contradictory yet captivating.

The dance theatre Chromas of a Dream—Fleeting Light and Shadows of Eileen Chang takes the writer’s first shortstory collection Romances as its core. Through flowing movement and multi-layered video design, stories of memory, illusion, and moonlight are brought to life anew. Ten spaces, ten lives, ten fleeting destinies glimpsed through fleeting light and shadows.

HKDance guest choreographer Xie Yin pours her creativity into this original work, using contemporary dance language to enter Eileen Chang’s literary world and explore her unique soul and imagination. In the year marking the 30th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the Motherland, the Company presents this new creation to distil the city’s cultural imagery, transforming literature into graceful dance and opening a new chapter in Hong Kong’s cultural classics.
