In Between —Wu Guanzhong’s Ink Odyssey
Synopsis
Wu Guanzhong was a towering figure in Chinese art in the twentieth century and beyond, garnering much international acclaim. Throughout his life, he pursued the convergence of East and West, creating an iconic body of work defined by a distinctive abstract vision and a masterful command of ink and brush. In a landmark collaboration, HKDance joins hands with French May Arts Festival to present a brand-new large-scale dance production, In Between —Wu Guanzhong’s Ink Odyssey. The piece interprets the master’s depictions of architecture, landscapes, and philosophical meditations in ink, translating brushstrokes into fluid movements, evoking rhythm and cadence, abstraction and form, as expressed through dots, lines, and planes. It opens up a dialogue between Chinese and Western cultures across different media and in multiple dimensions.
The production features acclaimed singer-songwriter Ivana Wong, alongside lighting designer Dominique Drillot and digital visual artist Sophie Laly from France, in a vivid interplay of Eastern and Western aesthetics.
This programme is co–presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and will premiere in 2026.
