ahead of the re-run of their Epic Martial Arts Dance Drama in February

The local comic legend Storm Riders, which resonates so deeply with the collective memories of Hong Kong people, celebrates its 35th anniversary. Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDance) once again collaborates with Mr. Ma Wing-shing, the legendary comics artist and original creator of this classic Hong Kong comic series, to bring the epic martial arts dance drama STORM CLOUDS back to the stage at Grand Theatre, Xiqu Centre, WestK in February 2025, after a ten-year hiatus. Ahead of the re-run of this award-winning production, we join forces with Don’t Believe In Style (DBIS), a leading local arts and technology team, and a group of talented artists, to present you a three-day large-scale outdoor free public event, STORM CLOUDS—An Immersive Journey: HK Classic Comics ✕ Dance ✕ Arts Tech, at the Piazza, Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 10 to 12 January 2025. Funded by the “Arts Technology Funding Pilot Scheme” of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the mega event breaks through the boundaries of time, space, and reality using innovative arts and technology. We invite you to explore a dazzling martial arts fantasy realm in Victoria Harbour.

A Dazzling Martial Arts Fantasy Realm in Victoria Harbour
(Public event with free admission)

Over a year in the making, the mega public event at Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 10 to 12 January 2025 consists of two major sections: an exhibition and a performance. The exhibition, the 270-degree arc-shaped STORM CLOUDS: An Interactive Time Travel Experience” showcases the creative journey of adapting the Storm Riders comics into dance. Here, visitors can step into iconic scenes from Storm Riders to acquire the legendary skills and see Mr Ma Wing-shing’s newly unveiled hand-drawn artwork “Raging Sea”, brought to life in dynamic 3D visuals, vividly presenting the tension between Lip Fung, Bo Ging-wan, and Hung Ba. This spectacular oeuvre is sure to wow audiences.

STORM CLOUDS: Outdoor Dance Performance with 3D Projection set against the stunning night-time backdrop of Victoria Harbour, combines 3D projection mapping with electronic music. Dancers interact with cutting-edge technology on an 8-metre-wide giant “Sword Pool” and catwalk stage, recreating the grandeur of Storm Clouds. This spectacular performance delivers a visual feast where Hong Kong comics, dance, and technology collide with breathtaking intensity.

For this artistic installation, we have specially invited participation from local tertiary institutions. In addition to students from the Department of Art and Design at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, who serve as docents, students of Theatre Design from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ School of Theatre & Entertainment Arts have been fortunate to receive personal guidance from Ma Wing-shing himself. Their large-scale mural artwork inspired by the classic Storm Riders is displayed on the exterior wall of the exhibition building. This collaboration connects the innovative thinking of today’s generation with the spirit of classic Hong Kong comics, fostering the continuation of local artistic creativity.

Events Details:

1. Dance drama STORM CLOUDS: Collection and Commemorative Exhibition
Exhibited at Foyer, Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 2 to 13 January, Mr Ma Wing-shing has generously lent his private Storm Riders collection, including character head sculptures and legendary weapons—the Ultimate Sword and Blizzard Sabres—for this commemorative exhibition. These are complemented by production stills from HKDance’s award-winning 2014 performance of Storm Clouds, offering a heartfelt glimpse into the essence of local arts and culture.

2. The 270-degree arc-shaped “An Interactive Time Travel Experience of STORM CLOUDS”
Running from 10 to 12 January at the Piazza, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, An Interactive Time Travel Experience of STORM CLOUDS comprises three zones. You begin your journey in The Epic Journey of Storm Clouds, where you can revisit Ma Wing-shing’s creative process in crafting Storm Riders and listen to HKDance’s Artistic Director Yang Yuntao share his connection with the story.

Next, you venture into the AR Filter: Acquire The Legendary Martial Arts Skills. Utilising Augmented Reality (AR) digital technology, the classic moves from Storm Clouds are dynamically brought to life in 3D, instantly transmitting these legendary skills and seamlessly bridging the virtual and real worlds. Simply scan the QR code with your mobile device, select the move (Cloud-Splitting Palm, Blizzard Sabres, or Three Divisions of Divine Finger), and transform into a legendary master. Immerse yourself in the raw power of Bo Ging-wan, Lip Fung, and Hung Ba’s martial arts prowess, and create your personalised Storm Clouds image!

Armed with your newfound mastery, dive into the LED 3D Interactive Visual Experience Zone. This innovative zone immerses you in cross-generational classics as you step into the illusory martial world crafted by the master comics artist Ma Wing-shing, where his epic Storm Riders meets the aesthetics of dance. The area presents five iconic scenes from Storm Riders, such as “Lake Pavilion” and “Sword Pool”. The 3D visuals stretch endlessly across a 270-degree LED wall, brought to life by motion capture technology, with the dancers’ movements depicting iconic scenes from Storm Rider, organically merging with the digital visuals. With just a touch of the screen, you evoke mysterious, romantic, and powerful visual and auditory elements; your footsteps leave imprints as stunning images emerge beneath you.
