HKDance Presents 45th Anniversary Celebration Grand Dance Drama
Kung Fu Artistry—Bruce Lee’s No Way as Way
Stellar Creative Team Pays Tribute to Bruce Lee with Cross-genre Dance Production
Plus Themed Exhibition, Film Screenings, and Culinary & Lifestyle Experiences
Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDance) is proud to unveil its 45th anniversary celebrations with the grand dance drama Kung Fu Artistry—Bruce Lee’s No Way as Way, presented by UOB Kay Hian, at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 27 November to 6 December 2025. In honour of the 85th anniversary of the birth of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, HKDance is honoured to be supported by its Supporting Partner, the Bruce Lee Foundation, as well as a stellar creative team, Man Lim-chung, winner of the Best Art Direction at the Hong Kong Film Awards; and celebrated jazz composer Patrick Lui, with calligraphy by Asian superstar and award-winning versatile actor Aaron Kwok, to present this unprecedented cross-genre production of martial arts and dance, multimedia stagecraft, and jazz music. Performed by professional dancers who have undertaken eight years of rigorous martial arts training, the work interprets Lee’s martial arts philosophy and spirit through a dynamic fusion of strength and grace. Kung Fu Artistry receives support from the China National Arts Fund 2025 for the creation of large-scale productions, and is a programme of Asia+ Festival 2025. Bruce Lee’s daughter and the Chairperson of the Bruce Lee Foundation, Shannon Lee and her daughter Wren Keasler, will travel to Hong Kong to attend the premiere of this dance drama.
In collaboration with a range of partners, HKDance will launch a vibrant series of Bruce Lee-themed complimentary activities beginning in late October as Bruce Lee’s spirit goes viral across the city! Highlights include a themed exhibition at K11 Art Mall featuring a striking 2.2-metre-tall LEGO statue of the martial arts icon and rare collections like an over-200-year-old nunchaku; excerpt performances of Kung Fu Artistry at K11 MUSEA; and a screening of Bruce Lee’s classic Enter the Dragon and post-screening talk at M+ Cinema. Adding to the excitement, HKDance’s Hong Kong Taste Partner, TamJai Yunnan Mixian and Exclusive Hotel Partner, The Peninsula Hong Kong will launch exclusive limited-edition collaborative products and offers.
Top local artists collaborate to portray Bruce Lee’s martial arts philosophy and life through dance
As the 45th anniversary celebration highlight of HKDance and presented by UOB Kay Hian, Kung Fu Artistry—Bruce Lee’s No Way as Way brings together a stellar team of Hong Kong’s artistic talents, including Yang Yuntao, Artistic Director of HKDance; Man Lim-chung, winner of the Best Art Direction at the Hong Kong Film Awards; and celebrated jazz composer Patrick Lui.
The storyline of Kung Fu Artistry traces Bruce Lee’s transformative journey—from his teenage street life to his rise as a legendary Hollywood star. Yang Yuntao, Director and Choreographer of Kung Fu Artistry, says: “This production begins with Bruce Lee's martial arts, capturing the fluidity and power of his movements. We will internalise his martial arts philosophy and spirit into the dance structure and aesthetics, ultimately creating an artistic expression rooted in the East, rooted in martial arts.” Through dance, performers reinterpret Lee’s unique blend of strength and gentleness, integrating martial arts forms such as Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, karate, and nunchaku with the expressive movements of Cantonese opera, the Wing Chun centreline theory, and the fluid aesthetics of ink wash imagery. This fusion of styles embolden us to find our own “Ways”.
Underwater promotional video resonating with Bruce Lee’s philosophy, directed by Man Lim-chung
Man Lim-chung, Art Director and Costume Designer of Kung Fu Artistry, has specially directed an underwater promotional video for the production centred around the elemental imagery of “water”. The video embodies the essence of Bruce Lee’s iconic philosophy—“Be Water”—fluid, resilient, formless, yet profoundly powerful. The choreography and music for the video were created respectively by Yang Yuntao, Artistic Director of HKDance and Patrick Lui, Music Director and Composer of Kung Fu Artistry.
Man Lim-chung explains the concept: “The visuals inside the video represent a self within the subconscious, confronting the challenge of the ‘alter egos’ that symbolises multiple facets of existence. The actor’s body moves fluidly in the water, the form constantly shifting with the currents and the stage lighting effects. The overall atmosphere conveys a tension that is soft yet strong, resonating with the philosophical idea of ‘being formless and shapeless’.”
Patrick Lui, Music Director and Composer of Kung Fu Artistry, shares: “Throughout the production process, I felt as if I were walking through Bruce Lee’s life. It compelled me to delve deeply into his martial arts evolution, artistic vision, and philosophical beliefs. It also challenged me to reflect on how to express his spirit through my own musical language.”
Aaron Kwok paying tribute to Bruce Lee through calligraphy
HKDance was honoured to invite Asian superstar and award-winning versatile actor Aaron Kwok to contribute a calligraphy piece for Kung Fu Artistry, promoting the development of Hong Kong’s culture and arts. Aaron inscribed the characters “李小龍 (Bruce Lee)” in a style that vividly evokes the martial arts legend’s iconic Jeet Kune Do preparatory pose. The piece has drawn widespread admiration, including high praise from Mandopop superstar Jay Chou, who shared it on social media and lauded the work as “incredibly powerful”.
Given Aaron’s long-standing dedication to promoting the development of the dance industry, he specially dedicated the “Bruce Lee” calligraphy to HKDance. Believing that dance and calligraphy are intrinsically connected, Aaron commented: “I’m a dancer too, and I hope my calligraphy can feel like dancing on paper, as if entering a realm “Where song meets painting and words dance in harmony”. In fact, both ‘martial arts’ and ‘dance’ embody the ideas of ‘structure’ and ‘infinity.’ Every dance requires technique, but it can express limitless physical language. Martial arts are the same.” Aaron also spoke enthusiastically about the upcoming performance: “ ‘Martial’ and ‘dance’ actually share many similarities: both are expressions of physical movement and dynamic energy. If they can be fused together, it would create a whole new spectacle. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the dancers will break through boundaries and showcase the dramatic power of this fusion between martial arts and dance. I’m also curious to see how they will deconstruct the calligraphy I created of Bruce Lee’s characters, transform and weave it into the choreography with visual effects. Wishing HKDance a successful performance.”

Venue: Foyer, Hong Kong Cultural Centre
Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), the “Cultural Partner” of Kung Fu Artistry—Bruce Lee’s No Way as Way, joins forces with HKDance to present the creative exhibition INSPIRE Bruce Lee in the foyer of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Inspired by Bruce Lee and the grand dance drama, students from four academic departments—Architecture, Interior & Product Design, Communication Design, Digital Media, and Fashion & Image Design—have created and curated a diverse collection of works spanning eight categories, including haute couture fashion pieces, interactive art installations, AI-generated animation, and cultural-creative products.
The creative concept of the special costume designs has also drawn inspiration from the award-winning work “Void” by fashion and image design graduate Mr. Hung Cho Hei Joe. The work was awarded the Gold Prize in the Avant-garde section of The World of WearableArt (WOW) 2025. It interprets the philosophical concept of “turning intangibles into tangibles” using Chinese ink elements and irregular 3D structures, thereby showcasing the profound connection between new-generation creativity and Bruce Lee’s enduring spirit, and offering a fresh perspective on artistic legacy and innovation.
