About the Production

Romance of the Three Kingdoms features seven of the most exciting and best-known episodes: Three Heroes Swear Brotherhood in the Peach Garden; Cao Cao Appraises Heroes in a Plum Garden; Lu Bu¡¦s and Diao Chan¡¦s Secret Rendezvous; Zhuge Liang's Empty City Stratagem; Guan Yu Escorts Liu Bei¡¦s Two Wives over a Thousand Miles; Zhao Yun Rescues Liu Bei¡¦s Son at Long Slope Bridge and Zhou Yu Sets Fire to Cao Cao¡¦s Chained Warships at the Red Cliff.

Dance combines forces with theatre to bring these towering legends back to life, each striking and memorable: the insightful Zhuge Liang, the elegant Zhou Yu, the loyal and brave Guan Yu, the Invincible Zhao Yun and the shrewd Cao Cao.

Taking after Chinese opera stage presence and drama techniques and modern theatrical interpretations, this is another fusion of Chinese dance traditions and contemporary visual arts aesthetics. Classic stories and legendary figures unfurl amongst plots and battlefields of the Three Kingdoms; this grand depiction of warring years bring romance, magnanimity, wisdom and intrigue to the stage. While exposing hypocrisy and villainy, Three Kingdoms also affirms the virtues of humanity which still shine 2,000 years on.

This production is another collaboration between playwright and academic adviser Gerard CC Tsang and Yang Yuntao, following the success of Mulan. The music features works for guqin from Wei and Jin dynasties as well as contemporary Chinese music. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is sure to stir the senses and create a new stage classic.
