Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove  Trailer

- a Modern Interpretation

Wasted Talents in a Turbulent World

“Theatrical magic”, “Exquisite lyricism and delicacy”

The New York Times on Yin Mei’s Works

The 3rd century marked the beginning of 200 years of wars and corruption in China. The educated class either shied away from politics and lived an hermitic life in the country like the Seven Sages, or they strutted around town as dilettantes, refined, elegant and impeccably dressed.

The Seven Sages and their legend take over the stage in this modern reinterpretation by choreographer Yin Mei. Inspired by the 4,000-year-old city Luoyang, the form, style and movement of Chinese dance is filtered through the abstract aesthetic of Han dynasty terracotta figures and costume.

Dreamlike, dramatic and mystical, Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove is a comment on the surreal changeability of history, fact and perspective.
