Established in 1981 with the aim of promoting Chinese dance, the Hong Kong Dance Company was incorporated in 2001 as a charitable and non-profit-making institution, and is financially supported by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Since its inception, the Hong Kong Dance Company has staged over 100 productions, many of which were highly popular with critical acclaim. Recent productions include Qingming Riverside, Evacuation Order, Everlasting Love, The Smiling Proud Wanderer, Snow Fox, Eagle Companions, Painted Face, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Poet Dongpo and Dance Roots.

The Company has toured internationally as well as around Mainland China as a way to encourage cultural exchange, visiting Australia, the United Kingdom, Korea, Singapore, Canada, Japan, Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Dongguan, Taipei and Macau. The tour performances were well received by the public with rave reviews.

Invited by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, the Company was the only Hong Kong dance company to perform at the “Meet in Beijing 2008” Arts Festival at the Olympics. In 2009, the Company was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the East Asian Games. In 2010, the Company participated in “The Ninth China Art Festival” in Guangzhou and the World Expo in Shanghai, with two performances of Qingming Riverside at the Shanghai Grand Theatre.

Leung Kwok-shing
Director & Choreographer/Artistic Director

A Guangdong Dance School graduate with over 40 years of experience in Chinese dance field, Leung Kwok-shing joined HKDC in 1981 as the first cohort of company dancers. He has also choreographed numerous highly acclaimed dance dramas and performances. His creations are based on traditional Chinese art and dance forms, blending Eastern and Western cultures together. His appointed works include The Story of Zhou Xuan, Suppressed Romance (1991), and Rouge (a collaborative work with the renowned dancer/choreographer Shu Qiao).

 Since then his production includes Classical Retrospective, King of Fairy Tales—The Eternal Child, The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, Qingming Riverside and Snow Fox.

Musical dance drama The Smiling, Proud Wanderer earned its fame as a miracle in the Hong Kong dance scene, and was met with much acclaim when toured to Shanghai. Qingming Riverside, which he created to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Hong Kong's handover, was praised as an artistically elegant dance poem, and was invited to be staged at the 5th Beijing Arts Festival, in Hangzhou and Nanjing, and in the National Centre for the Performing Arts as part of the "Meet In Beijing 2008" Arts Festival. It also triumphed at the 2007 Hong Kong Dance Awards. In 2008 he created The Call of Life to raise fund for the Sichuan earthquake. He was also involved in the choreography of The Equine Capital Hong Kong, which represented Hong Kong at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games in the Bird's Nest, and again achieved great success. He had also created and choreographed dance shows in celebration of Hong Kong's handover and China's National Day. Leung is the Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Dance Company starting from April 2009.

Yang Yuntao
Assistant Artistic Director

A member of the Bai ethnic minority in Yunnan, graduated from the Dance Department of the Central Ethnic University. He has been a soloist in the Guangdong Modern Dance Company and the Beijing Modern Dance Company. He won the Bronze Prize at the 1st Central Modern Dance Competition. As Principal Dancer in Ma and Le Visiting the Sky, Yang won the Gold Prize in the 2nd National Lotus Awards Competition and was named the Outstanding Male Performer in the 6th China Arts Festival. With South of the Cloud he won the Gold Award in Solo Dance at the 7th National Dance Competition for Ethnic Minorities. He joined Hong Kong Dance Company in 2002 as Principal Dancer, and received Hong Kong Dance Awards 2003 from Hong Kong Dance Alliance for his performance in Water Margin and The Song of the Earth. Yang joined City Contemporary Dance Company in 2005, and received Hong Kong Dance Awards 2006 again for his performance in The Conqueror. He joined the Hong Kong Dance Company in November 2007 as an Assistant Artistic Director.

Yang’s choreographic works include The Cheerful Ideal (Ke Le Li Xiang), Dream Music (Huan Yin) and At This Moment (Ci Shi Ci Ke) for Guangdong Modern Dance Company; Coffee- Mate (Ka Fei Ban Lu) in 2000 and performance soiree Drifting‧Fluttering (Piao‧Piao) with Zi Wei in 2002 for Beijing Modern Dance Company; Shall we dance? in 2007 for City Contemporary Dance Company. He was invited by the Hong Kong Dance Company to choreograph The Border Town in 2004 ,2007 and The Smiling, Proud Wanderer in 2006. In 2008, he directed and choreographed the dance drama Mulan.
