Established by the former Urban Council in 1981, with the aim of promoting Chinese dance, the Hong Kong Dance Company was formally incorporated in April 2001 as a charitable and non-profit-making institution, and is financially supported by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Since its inception, the Hong Kong Dance Company has staged over 100 productions, many of which were highly popular and won critical acclaim. Recent productions include The Border Town, Bashu with Glamour, King of Fairy Tales – The Eternal Child, Red Poppies, Little Panda in a Big Big World, Dream Dances, The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, Qingming Riverside, Angel Falls, Desperately Seeking Miss Blossom ,Mulan, 8/F Platform- Hong Kong Spring and Snow Fox.

The Company has also performed overseas and in the mainland to foster cultural exchange, and tour stops include countries and cities like Australia, the United Kingdom, Korea, Singapore, Canada, Japan, Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Dongguan, Taipei and Macau; and in all the places the company visited, the performances were very well received with raving reviews.

 

  

Mission Statement

The Hong Kong Dance Company aims to promote Chinese dance culture and develop the arts identity of Hong Kong. It seeks to provide a platform where dance addresses the world around it. It sets its sights on the artistic development of its artists and audiences and projecting that vision in Hong Kong and abroad.

The Hong Kong Dance Company believes that dance derives from tradition but is not limited by boundaries. The unique culture and history of Hong Kong, that coalesces East and West, is a rich artistic source for Hong Kong dance. In creation, performance, promotion, training, and dance development, the Hong Kong Dance Company emphasizes Chinese traditional aesthetics with a forward-looking vision that seeks to portray the contemporary face of Hong Kong and reflect its pulse through artistic expressions.
